Sections 30.1 to 30.9 list system requirements, supported formats and storage locations. Sections 30.10 to 30.18 explain warnings and errors and what to do about them. Each table points to the chapter covering the subject.
30.1 System Requirements
Revela needs macOS 26.1 or later on an Apple silicon Mac, and a Pearla account the first time it opens. It needs to be online from time to time to confirm the license, and works offline in between for the period the license agreement states (Chapter 1).
30.2 Files Revela Imports
Revela accepts the following file extensions. Other files are left out.
| Kind | Formats | Covered in |
|---|---|---|
| Raw stills | Canon .cr2 and .cr3, Sony .arw, Nikon .nef, Panasonic .rw2, Olympus .orf, Fujifilm .raf, Hasselblad .3fr, DNG .dng, PearlaRAW .praw | Chapters 3, 12 |
| Movies | .mov, .mp4, .m4v | Chapters 3, 12 |
| Raw video | PearlaRAW .prawv, Apple ProRes RAW (a .mov carrying ProRes RAW or ProRes RAW HQ), Blackmagic RAW .braw, Nikon N-RAW .nev | Chapters 3, 12 |
JPEG, HEIC, HEIF, TIFF and PNG images are not imported. An import counts
them as files to be skipped; an adoption sets them aside, untouched, in the location’s
Unmanaged folder. REDCODE RAW (.r3d) and X-OCN are not accepted. Hidden files and
packages inside a chosen folder are skipped.
30.3 Raw Video Formats
The raw clip’s format determines its Develop controls and which settings can be changed.
| Format | Tab | Unavailable or fixed settings |
|---|---|---|
PearlaRAW .prawv | The Develop tab, as for a raw still | Luminance, Color, Sharpness, Detail, Moiré and Lens Correction are grayed |
| Apple ProRes RAW | The Develop tab, as for a raw still | As for .prawv |
| Blackmagic RAW | The Develop tab with the maker’s controls | Noise reduction, sharpness, detail and moiré are not offered; Revela’s own Lens Correction is not offered; the tab shows the fixed settings Generation 5, Blackmagic Design Film, Wide Gamut; the look file embedded in the clip is listed in the Info tab and never applied |
| Nikon N-RAW | The Develop tab with the maker’s controls | Noise reduction, sharpness, detail and moiré are not offered; Revela’s own Lens Correction is not offered; the color science and gamma are fixed; the embedded look file is never applied |
Every raw clip has Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks, Punch, camera output color space and Tone Mapping controls. Raw clips never get a proxy.
Chapter 12 covers each tab; Chapter 9 covers playback.
30.4 Export Formats for Stills
Where to find it: the Output tab, File section, on a still’s output or a clip’s
Frame output.
Format | Color spaces it can carry | Settings |
|---|---|---|
JPEG | The display and print spaces | Quality 0 to 100, default 90 |
HEIF | The display and print spaces, the HDR spaces, every log space | Quality 0 to 100, default 90; Gain map for sRGB and Display P3 |
TIFF | The display and print spaces, both linear spaces, every log space | Bit depth 8-bit or 16-bit, default 16-bit |
PNG | The display and print spaces, Linear sRGB | Bit depth 8-bit or 16-bit, default 16-bit |
The HDR spaces need HEIF. 8-bit is offered for the SDR display spaces only.
Resolution is Source, Long edge or Size, and Long edge never enlarges.
Metadata is All, All but location (the default), Copyright only or None.
Chapter 24 covers every row; Chapter 25 covers what metadata carries.
30.5 Export Formats for Video
Where to find it: the Output tab, Video and Audio sections, on a clip’s Video
output.
| Row | Choices |
|---|---|
Format | Movie: QuickTime, MP4. Image sequence: TIFF, PNG, OpenEXR |
Codec | Apple ProRes 422 Proxy, Apple ProRes 422 LT, Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes 422 HQ (default), Apple ProRes 4444, Apple ProRes 4444 XQ, H.264, H.265. MP4 takes H.264 and H.265 only |
Encoding | H.264: Auto, Main, High. H.265: Auto, Main, Main10, Main 4:2:2 10 (QuickTime only) |
Quality, Key frames | H.264 and H.265 only: Automatic or Restrict to a rate in Mb/s; Automatic or Every so many frames |
HDR10 | Embed metadata, on a movie in a PQ space |
Bit depth (sequences) | 8-bit or 16-bit (default) for TIFF and PNG; Half float (default) or Float for OpenEXR |
Frame rate | Read-only, as shot. Revela does not retime |
Audio Codec | Linear PCM (default), AAC, ALAC (Apple Lossless) |
Audio Bit depth | 16-bit, 24-bit (default), 32-bit, 32-bit float for Linear PCM; 16-bit and 24-bit for ALAC |
Sample rate | 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz (default), 96 kHz. AAC stops at 48 kHz |
Channels | Same as source · stereo (the source’s own layout shown), Mono, Stereo, 5.1 |
An 8-bit movie holds the display spaces only. HDR, linear and log spaces need H.265 at
Main10 or Main 4:2:2 10, or a ProRes codec. Adobe RGB (1998) is never offered on
video. An OpenEXR sequence carries no metadata, and a sequence carries no audio. A
dimmed choice gives its reason in its tooltip: Needs H.264 or H.265, Needs another encoding, Needs another colour space, QuickTime only, Linear PCM or ALAC only,
The clip has fewer than six channels, Linear PCM only for this many channels or
Needs mono, stereo or 5.1. Chapter 24 covers the rows.
30.6 Delivery Color Spaces
Where to find it: the Output tab, Colour space.
| Group | Spaces |
|---|---|
Display | sRGB, Display P3, Rec.709, Rec.709-A (Apple) |
Print | Adobe RGB (1998) |
HDR | HLG BT.2020, PQ BT.2020 (HDR10), PQ P3 |
Linear | Linear sRGB, Linear BT.2020 |
| Camera log, by brand | Pearl-Log; Sony S-Log3 / S-Gamut3.Cine, S-Log2 / S-Gamut; Panasonic V-Log / V-Gamut; ARRI LogC3 / AWG3, LogC4 / AWG4; Canon C-Log2 / Cinema Gamut, C-Log3 / Cinema Gamut, C-Log / Cinema Gamut; Nikon N-Log / BT.2020; Fujifilm F-Log2 / F-Log Gamut, F-Log / F-Log Gamut; Blackmagic BMD Film Gen 5 / Wide Gamut; Apple Apple Log / BT.2020, Apple Log 2 / Apple Wide Gamut; DJI D-Log / D-Gamut; Insta360 I-Log / BT.2020; Leica L-Log / BT.2020 |
A new output is sRGB on a still and Rec.709-A (Apple) on a clip. A space the chosen
format or bit depth cannot carry is dimmed; Revela never changes the format for you.
The spaces a file can be declared in at import are a separate list (Chapter 12).
Chapter 24 covers tone mapping, the film profile and conversion on an output.
30.7 LUTs and Profiles
| Direction | Formats | Covered in |
|---|---|---|
| Import | .cube, .3dl, and a .png holding a Hald identity grid. A LUT with a very large grid or an unusual input range is adjusted to fit; it imports and works | Chapter 14 |
Export LUT | A .cube of 17, 33 (default) or 65 points per axis, for pictures in Pearla Wide Gamut. It carries the color work only | Chapter 14 |
Export Verana Profile | A .pprof carrying the output’s complete look, film profile and Punch included, for Verana | Chapter 14 |
30.8 Exported File Names
| What | Name | Covered in |
|---|---|---|
One output of a still, or a Frame | <photo>_<output>.<ext>; an unnamed output is Output | Chapter 25 |
| One movie | <clip>_<output>.mov or .mp4 | Chapter 25 |
| An image sequence | A folder <clip>_<output>, taking _2, _3 if one exists; frames <folder>_000001.<ext> onward, counted from the in point | Chapter 25 |
| A batch | <photo>_<output>.<ext>; with One folder per output, <output>/<photo>.<ext>; with Include subfolders, the source’s folder layout under the destination | Chapter 25 |
| Two files on one name in one job | The second takes _2, the third _3, in the same order on every run | Chapter 25 |
| A LUT | <photo>_<output>.cube | Chapter 14 |
| A Verana profile | <name>.pprof, the name from Profile name | Chapter 14 |
| Originals | The camera filename, with a manifest.csv beside them; Recreate the original folder layout restores an adopted folder’s old names and folders | Chapter 6 |
30.9 The Catalog and Its Stores
A catalog is a .revela package. It holds folders, edits, ratings, presets and small
thumbnails. It does not hold the originals.
Originals live in stores. Revela creates this Mac’s store on first launch and names it after the Mac. Unless you choose another location, it is in the Revela folder in Pictures. It must be on the Mac itself and outside any sync service. Every catalog on the Mac
keeps its originals there, each with its own files. The same store keeps each catalog’s
large thumbnails and proxies, its LUT files and reference images, and an hourly copy of
the catalog file.
A store on a drive is a package Revela makes on that drive, named after the catalog and
belonging to that catalog alone. An adopted folder stays where it was, with its files
renamed into Revela’s layout and the files Revela does not import kept in its
Unmanaged folder. The files inside a store are Revela’s to manage; do not move or
rename them.
Where to find it: File → Catalogue Info
The info sheet lists what is in the catalog file, the size of the originals in each store, where the thumbnails, proxies, LUT files and reference images are, and when the last hourly copy was made. Chapter 6 covers stores and locations; Chapter 26 covers repositories, which are folders Revela makes in a place you choose.
30.10 Reading the Troubleshooting Tables
Each row gives the screen message, its meaning, the action to take and the reference chapter. Messages that belong to a single editing tool (chart calibration, subject selection, a heal source over an edge, graph wiring) are explained beside the tool in Chapters 11, 15, 16, 19 and 20, and are not repeated here.

30.18 Tracking Loss
Where to find it: the Tracking section of the Mix tab for a mask component, of the
Healing tab for a heal item, and of the Frequency Separation tab for its node, on a
clip.
The Status line reports each track. The track’s lane on the scrubber draws a lost run
as dashes inside the tracked span, and frames where the track may have drifted in amber.
| Screen says | Meaning | What to do | Ch. |
